Douglas MacGregor, retired US Colonel, has become widely known in recent times due to his prominent and well-argued opposition to current US policy in the Ukraine. His active war record in leading a tank group in Desert Storm in 1991 is often cited but after active duty he became involved in the war planning department of the US Army.
In this excerpt from a recent (August 2024) interview Col MacGregor recounts how one of his first tasks in 1994/5 was to analyse the situation in the Balkans and write a paper on what policy the US should adopt from a military standpoint. He argued that there were no long term strategic interests for the US and furthermore becoming involved militarily ran the risk of alienating Russia who had historic ties to the area. His superiors all the way up the chain of command agreed and so the paper was taken to the White House by the Army Chief of Staff… As the Colonel describes the response from the Clinton regime: “Wrong! We’re intervening!”
