This bombing exposed the hypocrisy and double standards of both NATO and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia in the starkest way imaginable.
If it was criminal for the Serbs to bomb the TV building in Sarajevo why then wasn’t it a war crime when NATO bombed the TV station in Belgrade? The partiality could not have been more blatant.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair sought to justify this disgraceful act by claiming RTS propaganda was a vital part of Milosevic’s war machine – quite unlike the Voice of America and BBC World Service TV & Radio which remained unblocked by Serbia throughout the conflict.
NATO and the western media were very much in bed together. CNN’s star presenter Christiane Amanpour had recently married James Rubin, Madeleine Albright’s right hand man. Needless to say CNN warned their staff to stay away from Belgrade TV on the night of the bombing. Other broadcasters clearly weren’t so fortunate.
The BBC‘s John Simpson has the air of a man who is lucky to be alive.
