It was largely the work of the great Western powers who wanted a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>war that would<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>advance their own selfish interests. They planned it, willed it and ultimately made sure it happened.<\/p>\n<p>The Americans, British, French and Germans all colluded illegally to create the Kosovo Liberation Army in Albania in 1996. In defiance of sanctions they secretly<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>trained them, equipped them and supplied them with arms. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This army then crossed the border into Kosovo early in 1998 with the intention of taking the whole of the Serbian province by force &#8211; an attempted invasion of a sovereign state, illegal under international law and the UN Charter. \u00a0It almost succeeded.<\/p>\n<p>The KLA had control of most of Kosovo before Serbian forces rallied and retook much of the territory they had lost. This operation to recover sovereign territory prompted the western powers to launch a huge propaganda campaign against the Serbs portraying them as vicious oppressors of the Kosovo Albanians.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>International press coverage quickly fell into line.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2018\" style=\"font-size: 1rem;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Holbrooke.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"140\" height=\"117\" \/><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Both sides were then summoned to peace talks by US diplomat Richard Holbrooke. The<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Serbs were forced to withdraw under a peace agreement which the KLA then promptly broke by re-occupying the Serb lands. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2026\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2026\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2026\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Albright-1-300x191.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"191\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Albright-1-300x191.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Albright-1-768x490.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Albright-1-1024x653.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2026\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">The EU turned a blind eye to this but US Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, spied<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333; font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">an opportunity.<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2020\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/William-Walker-and-pals-300x205.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"206\" height=\"141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/William-Walker-and-pals-300x205.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/William-Walker-and-pals.jpeg 420w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/>She swiftly<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">appointed William Walker, a notorious diplomatic fixer, to head the UN Verification Mission in Kosovo. His real job was to engineer the circumstances that would justify NATO intervention. This became mission accomplished the moment Walker arrived in the KLA village of<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Racak to investigate the alleged massacre of 45 Albanians with gunshot wounds.<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/_P7hQ-4xRvQ\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/_P7hQ-4xRvQ<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">Although it was<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">later exposed as<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">a crudely staged deception, Walker declared on the spot that<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">it was a massacre committed by the Serbs, an \u2018unspeakable act\u2019 and a crime against humanity.<\/span>\u00a0 <span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">This gave Albright all she needed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Within days both sides were called to showdown negotiations at the imposing French chateau of Rambouillet.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The strategy for the talks was simple: to get the KLA to accept terms giving them most of what they wanted and to make the Serbs an offer they couldn\u2019t possibly accept. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Y_8iQoXn-LY\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/Y_8iQoXn-LY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Throughout the talks the world was fed constant reports of Serbian intransigence. It is now known that, surprisingly, they had actually agreed to many harsh demands. The Serbs\u2019 final rejection only came when the Americans introduced new terms at the last minute including the imposition of a full NATO occupation force.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>European politicians widely viewed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>this demand as unacceptable for any sovereign nation. \u00a0And so the die was cast.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Rambouillet was a monumentally cynical stitch-up that brought chaos to the people of Kosovo. NATO\u2019s 78 day bombing campaign wrecked the Yugoslav economy and provoked precisely the humanitarian catastrophe it was supposed to prevent. But it also restored NATO credibility, giving the alliance a new sense of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>power and purpose now the Cold War was over.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And, above all, the illegal bombing allowed the western powers to achieve many of their most cherished strategic objectives.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2021\" src=\"http:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Camp-Bondsteel-300x234.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Camp-Bondsteel-300x234.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Camp-Bondsteel.jpeg 489w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>It enabled the US to destroy Yugoslavia, a state high on its list for\u00a0\u2018regime change\u2019;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>secure its oil supplies by building the Caspian oil pipeline;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>seize land in Kosovo to build Camp Bondsteel, its biggest international base outside the USA, and help itself to the Trepca silver and lead-zinc mines and other Serbian assets. \u00a0Germany, only a few years after re-unification, took part in its first armed combat since WW2, while<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>France and the UK were able to strengthen their relationships with the world\u2019s supreme superpower.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The bombing that brought such disaster for those on the ground was a triumph for the major powers.
