Finnish forensic experts in a final report on the circumstances of the\u00a0deaths two years ago of some 40 people in the village of Racak in Kosovo\u00a0found no evidence of a massacre by Serb security forces, a German\u00a0newspaper\u00a0reported Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Berliner Zeitung said the report, which was made available to the Berlin\u00a0paper prior to its publication, found no evidence that ethnic Albanian\u00a0civilians had been executed by Serbian security forces in Racak.<\/p>\n

The report by experts Juha Rainio, Kaisa Lalu and Antti Penttila would\u00a0soon\u00a0be published in the forensic magazine “Forensic Science International”,\u00a0it\u00a0said.<\/p>\n

The bodies were found on January 15, 1999 in the hills above the village\u00a0in\u00a0the troubled Serbian province.<\/p>\n

The Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) said in\u00a0spring 1999 it had found evidence for slayings of unarmed civilians in\u00a0Racak, many of whom were found disfigured and shot at close range.<\/p>\n

The alleged massacre strengthened Western resolve against then Yugoslav\u00a0strongman Slobodan Milosevic despite official denials that Serbian\u00a0forces\u00a0had been behind the killings.<\/p>\n

Belgrade authorities at the time insisted the bodies were slain rebels\u00a0of\u00a0the Kosovo Liberation Army which they said had deliberately set up the\u00a0scene\u00a0to make OSCE observers believe there had been a massacre.<\/p>\n

“Only now does the truth come out, at that time no one believed us,” a\u00a0source in the Serbian Interior Ministry said Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Rainio, Lalu and Penttila belonged to a panel of Finnish experts led by\u00a0Helena Ranta that was asked by the European Union in spring 1999 to\u00a0investigate the killings. The probe was carried out along with Serbian\u00a0and\u00a0Belarussian experts.<\/p>\n

The report said the panel was unable to confirm that the victims were\u00a0villagers from Racak. The experts were also unable to reconstruct the\u00a0“events” prior to the autopsies of the bodies.<\/p>\n

The report said even the exact site of the incident had not been
\nestablished\u00a0either.<\/p>\n

The three experts said there had been no evidence that the bodies had\u00a0been\u00a0disfigured after their deaths. The 40 bodies that had been examined had\u00a0been\u00a0found to show between one and 20 bullet wounds. Only in one case did\u00a0they\u00a0find traces of gun smoke that might point to an execution.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
