{"id":1418,"date":"2020-04-20T15:00:58","date_gmt":"2020-04-20T14:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/?page_id=1418"},"modified":"2020-04-20T15:00:58","modified_gmt":"2020-04-20T14:00:58","slug":"mary-mostert-on-racak-original-sources-24-january-2001","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.balkan-conflicts-research.com\/archive\/mary-mostert-on-racak-original-sources-24-january-2001\/","title":{"rendered":"Mary Mostert on Racak, Original Sources 24 January 2001"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Racak Autopsy Report and the Milosevic Indictment Top News in Europe<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By: Mary Mostert, Analyst, Original Sources (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.originalsources.com\/\">www.originalsources.com<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>January 24, 2001<\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s London Telegraph we find that the new Yugoslav president,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Kostunica, met with Carla Del Ponte, prosecutor for the International<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) yesterday.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Del<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Ponte had demanded Kostunica produce Slobodan Milosevic so she could<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>take him to the Hague and trim him for war crimes, such as the much<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>reported massacre at Racak. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Today it almost seems like ancient history, but actually it was only<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>two years ago that we were hearing about a horrible massacre that had<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>taken place at Racak, in Kosovo.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>CNN reported on January 16, 1999:<\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;It was the worst killing spree since an October truce largely<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>halted more than seven months of combat.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;The discovery of the bodies came one day after Serb police and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Yugoslav Army units attacked ethnic Albanian villages in the area.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Observers had been prevented from reaching the area on Friday.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;Some victims had their eyes gouged out or heads smashed in, and one<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>man lay decapitated in the courtyard of his compound.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;The news agency run by the Kosovo Liberation Army reported 46 dead<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and said eight of them were fighters with the KLA, an ethnic Albanian<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>rebel group seeking independence for the Yugoslav province.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;Villagers said Serb police separated men from their families and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>led them toward the local police station. They later turned and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>herded them up the hill, where they killed them, the residents said.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Two months later, largely because of the reports about Racak, Bill<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Clinton began bombing Belgrade and Kosovo.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Five months later, The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia indicted<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Slobodan Milosevic, the president of Yugoslavia, for &#8220;war crimes&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>which included the deaths at Racak, even though Milosevic, of course,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was not IN Racak when the deaths occurred. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>That prompted US Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott to exclaim,\u00a0&#8220;We&#8217;re not talking to Milosevic except in one language and that&#8217;s bombing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The US media has responded by stepping up demands for an invasion of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Yugoslavia. The indictment has been cited as proof that not only<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>government leaders, but the entire Serb population is complicit in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>war crimes and must be punished. The Wall Street Journal on May 28<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>published a column entitled &#8220;Indictment Demands Invasion&#8221; which<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>declared NATO could accept nothing short of the occupation of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Belgrade and a program of &#8220;de-Nazification,&#8221; beginning with war<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>crimes trials of the entire Serbian leadership.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There is only one small problem with this whole scenario.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>considerable evidence that there never was a massacre of Albanian<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>civilians by Serbs in Racak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>In March, a week before the bombing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>started, Finnish pathologists issued a forensic report on the bodies<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>supposedly found in a mass grave of people killed by cold-blooded<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Serbs. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Finnish report in &#8220;Politika&#8221; stated :\u00a0&#8220;the authorized team of the Finish pathologists confirmed in their<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>official report that in the Kosmet village of Racak, on the last 15th<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>January, the massacre had not been committed and, therefore, there is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>no possibility to use this incident as an excuse for the military<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>threat to Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;According to that what &#8220;Politika&#8221; learns from reliable sources, in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>the report of the Finish specialists of medical jurisprudence there<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>are even more details which indict the Albanian side than there were<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in already reported findings of our and Belarusian pathologists. In<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>addition to other methods, the Finnish pathologists determined by a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>special analysis &#8220;paraffin glove&#8221; that all killed had previously shot<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>from firearms. They also found out that their corpses were brought<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>from some other place later on. In this way once more, and hopefully<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>finally, the accusations of William Walker, Chief of the OESC Mission<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>for Verification in Kosovo and Metohija, that the Serbian police<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>committed the massacre of gathered helpless civilians was rejected as<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>untrue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, I received still another report about Racak by e-mail.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was a translation of the general conclusions made by Professor<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Srboljub Zivanovic, a fellow of the Royal Anthropological Institute<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>and a member of the forensic archeology community in Britain.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>One of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>his students was involved in the autopsies. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The findings of both<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>sets of forensic experts were the same.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There just was no massacre<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>at Racak.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>There was a gun battle, CNN notwithstanding. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>So, why should we care about all this now?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Perhaps we should care<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>because we were hoodwinked into destroying a nation and killing<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>several thousand people because of media reports about Racak, and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>because the people like Carla Del Ponte, prosecutor for the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>International Tribunal Carla<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Del Ponte say Milosevic MUST be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>arrested and surrendered to The Hague for trial for war crimes. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Kostunica not only didn&#8217;t turn Milosevic over to her, he gave her a<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>bit of a tongue lashing. In an interview with Kostunica, an Italian<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>newspaper, Torino,<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Kostunica is reported to have said to her: <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0&#8216;We know exactly who is the author of the idea of aggression and<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>who committed the largest number of attacks. It is the United States<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>of America and there is no doubt that they are the most responsible.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;The Yugoslav President assessed that bombing violated not only<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Geneva conventions but also international law and basic moral norms.\u00a0&#8216;Passenger trains, convoys of refugees, hospitals, refineries were<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>bombed. All of that cannot be described except as a crime&#8217;, Kostunica<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>emphasized.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>As a confirmation of that position, he specially pointed out to<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>bombing with depleted uranium projectiles, which caused large<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>ecological damage in the entire region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Shame and all lies about depleted uranium clearly swam to the<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>surface and it is the first serious reason to meet with Mrs. Del<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Ponte. I will ask her what she, as a prosecutor of the Hague<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Tribunal, plans to do on the occasion of that crime&#8217;, Yugoslav<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>President said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;Evaluating that &#8216;scale of responsibility exists&#8217; and that, it is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8216;naturally in accordance with military and political influence in<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>North Atlantic Pact&#8217;, Kostunica underlined that &#8220;there are no doubts<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that the United States of America are the most responsible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>None of the top American news sources today are reporting this story<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>yet it is the lead story in most European countries.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>The<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>International Herald Tribune in Paris quotes Kostunica in an<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>interview as saying:\u00a0&#8220;Political change has happened both in Washington and in Belgrade,&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>he said, &#8220;and I truly believe the changes are for the better. I think<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Washington&#8217;s attitude towards Yugoslavia and the Balkans will be<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>colored more by economics than politics. Good business and investment<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>plans are far more beneficial than any hasty peace plans and quick<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>solutions, which came too late in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are very interested in putting our relations with the United<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>States on a new footing. The advantage of a new administration is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that it is not responsible&#8221; for past decisions, Mr. Kostunica said.\u00a0&#8220;I would like to see more understanding of the realities of Balkans,&#8221;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>he said. &#8220;For example, much has been said about a multiethnic society<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>in Kosovo, but we are far away from that and have many displaced<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Serbian people, and much terrorism and violence that has been brought<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>from Kosovo to Serbia.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he was concerned that Washington might now pay less<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>attention to Yugoslavia, Mr. Kostunica said that &#8220;in some ways it is<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>paradoxical, but from one point of view the previous administration<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>was paying more attention to this region than it should, and now<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>there are consequences of this policy, such as Kosovo, and the fact<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that a large part of the Serbian economy has been destroyed, and now<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>we also have this depleted-uranium affair&#8221; &#8211; a reference to the fact<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that the U.S. military used depleted-uranium shells in the Balkans<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>that contained minute traces of the highly toxic substance.<\/p>\n<p>The Clinton administration, Mr. Kostunica concluded, &#8220;was paying too<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>much attention to us, and we are facing the consequences, which<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>should be faced by the Americans as well.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>While America continues to pretend that bombing Yugoslavia for 79<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>days is of little or no consequence, what the new Bush Administration<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>does about its aftermath could very well determine how the world<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>views American leadership in the years to come. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Racak Autopsy Report and the Milosevic Indictment Top News in Europe By: Mary Mostert, Analyst, Original Sources (www.originalsources.com) January 24, 2001 In today&#8217;s London Telegraph we find that the new Yugoslav president,\u00a0Kostunica, met with Carla Del Ponte, prosecutor for the International\u00a0Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) yesterday.\u00a0 Del\u00a0Ponte had demanded Kostunica produce Slobodan Milosevic &hellip;
