Albright may be replaced for Yugoslav mistakes\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n

MOSCOW, June 30 (Itar-Tass) – US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright\u00a0may be dismissed already this summer for mistakes in the US policy\u00a0regarding Yugoslavia, a Russian influential newspaper reported on Wednesday\u00a0citing its sources in Washington.<\/p>\n

“In Washington they are talking that a certain reshuffle will take\u00a0place in the State Department leadership before this autumn. President Bill\u00a0Clinton has reportedly found a worthy replacement to current Secretary\u00a0of State Madeleine Albright”, the Nezavisimaya Gazeta wrote.<\/p>\n

It said that although officially the USA continues to attribute to\u00a0itself all the successes in solving the Kosovo crisis, “a different viewpoint\u00a0exists in Washington and it comes from the very top”. The daily said\u00a0the first victims were CIA deputy director Jack Downing and head of the CIA\u00a0Euroasian department John Bender.<\/p>\n

The entourage of the US president “does not conceal that the beginning\u00a0of combat actions in Yugoslavia was a clear mistake of the Department of\u00a0State. Madeleine Albright convinced Clinton that the bombing of\u00a0Yugoslavia will have no political consequences for the United States. Her\u00a0forecasts about an early collapse of the Milosevic regime after the beginning of air strikes resembled the revelations of Nostradamus, rather than a sober\u00a0view of an experienced politician”, the newspaper said, adding that Clinton\u00a0received “one-sided” reports based on sources in the Kosovo Liberation\u00a0Army and the opposition to Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.<\/p>\n

“Clinton was convinced to start the military action”, the Nezavisimaya\u00a0Gazeta said.\u00a0However, the policy collapsed and the air strikes yielded no immediate\u00a0result. The Department of State was also wrong in predicting the\u00a0Russian reaction and its diplomatic retaliation, according to the daily.<\/p>\n

“The actual collapse of the American (and in essence of personally\u00a0Albright’s) scenario of the settlement of the Kosovo conflict may\u00a0result in a defeat of the Democratic party at the next presidential elections”,\u00a0the daily said, adding that the Republicans can take advantage of the\u00a0“vulnerability of the current administration”.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
